Lucas Fonseca

Assistant Professor in Robotics and AI
School of Computer Science, University of Nottingham

I study human movement and use sensing, interfaces and intelligent systems to support rehabilitation, health and independence. I am a member of CHART, the Cyber-physical Health and Assistive Robotics Technologies research group.

My research connects movement analysis with assistive robotics, personalised access and user-centred technology for people with neurological and physical impairments.

A research path grounded in movement

Much of my earlier work focuses on spinal cord injury, including functional electrical stimulation and interfaces that draw on a person’s residual movement and muscle activity. I previously held research positions at Inria in France, including a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowship focused on neuroprosthesis interfaces for people with upper-limb disabilities.

I am now extending this movement-centred approach to intelligent mobility, rehabilitation technology and human–robot interaction. The central question remains the same: how can technology offer useful assistance while keeping the person in control?
